Old-fashioned mechanical self-winding watches have been displaced in the market-place by reasonably priced battery operated watches.  However, the very finest and most expensive watches are still mechanical.   But who needs a Watch Winder?

If you are a watchmaker and you regularly have customers’ watches waiting for repair you would need a Watch Winder to keep them ticking until you have time to work on them.  But do you, as an individual, need a Watch Winder?

Watch Winders are expensive.  The price for one might be as low as $200 and as high as $5,000.  But suppose you are a commodities investor and have a major market position in (say) titanium or hog bellies.  Perhaps you own a gold Patek Philippe ($15,000) for social events and a stainless-steel Rolex ($5,000) for work.  Then you should consider a Watch Winder ($3,000) so that the alternate watch does not run down.  It is actually an attractive conversation piece, in polished rosewood or fine leather.
